Business Schools Profiles

Are you thinking about getting an MBA?

Or are you deep into your research, reviewing business school profiles and trying to decide which business school is right for you?

Choosing the right business school can feel overwhelming – there are a lot of schools out there, and many important factors to consider:

Cost, reputation, location, teaching style, alumni networks, majors or focus areas offered.

For all their differences, you may be surprised at just how many similarities there are among top business schools, both within the United States and outside of it.

What Top Business Schools Have In Common

Almost all of the top-ranked business schools on our list have a career placement rate above 90%, and typically with very high average salaries reported ($100,000 or above).

So while those numbers are important to look at, you also want to consider the tools that different schools offer to help with your post-graduation job search.

If you’re early in your career, weekly career development seminars and regular meetings with the Career Development Center can feel extremely useful.

Strong career-focused programs like the ones at NYU Stern, Cambridge Judge, or IE Business School may be a good fit for you.

If your MBA program was sponsored by your current employer, on the other hand, those same activities may feel less useful; you may want to consider a school like Columbia (where students can choose to skip a summer internship and complete their MBA in only 18 months).

Similarly, you may want to consider the importance of having a global component to your MBA program. The modern business world is increasingly international, a fact which all of the top-ranked business schools on our list understand and address.

But for some schools, the global component is satisfied by coursework in an international business class or optional trips, whereas other schools make studying or working internationally a requirement of the program.

If international experience is particularly important, consider schools like Tuck (which requires all students to complete at least one course in a country they’ve never been to before) or INSEAD (where 70% of students use the campus transfer option to spend the second half of their MBA program in one of the school’s five international campuses).

Teaching style is also an important consideration. Harvard Business School was a pioneer in the Case Method of instruction, where real-world issues affecting businesses are presented to students, who work individually or in small groups to devise solutions to the challenges and discuss and defend their strategies with the class as a while.

UVA Darden and IESE Business School also follow the Case Method, while Yale School of Management tweaks the traditional case method by requiring students to sift through extensive background information on the cases presented in order to find the most relevant and important details.

Top 20 B-School Profiles

Below, you’ll find mini profiles for 20 of the most prestigious business schools in the world. Wherever you are in the process, you’ll find useful information about the many different MBA programs available to you.

We’ve also included helpful links to the school websites, complete profiles for each school, and additional tips on writing a great MBA admissions essay, and the admissions process as a whole.

School summary & curriculum highlights

With their first MBA degree awarded in 1999, Yale School of Management is a newcomer to the world of business schools. Fortunately, this upstart position has allowed them to craft a business school curriculum that is truly on the cutting edge.

Yale SOM takes a novel approach to the traditional case study teaching model. Rather than offering students concise overviews of real-world business challenges to discuss, the school gives students a sizeable dossier of information on the issue – both relevant and not.

In this way, students learn to sift through the information they receive to determine which details will help them make the best choice. The inverted case model is just one example of how Yale is helping to build tomorrow’s business leaders.

School summary & curriculum highlights

INSEAD offers one of the shortest MBA programs available: students graduate in less than a year. Don’t let the program’s brief length fool you, though: INSEAD has a top-ranked international MBA, and they pack a lot into those ten months.

Students are placed into study teams to move through core courses together, from basic topics like accounting and operations management to classes like International Political Analysis and Macroeconomics in the Global Economy.

During the second and more individualized portion of the program, students are able to transfer from their home school (in either France or Singapore) to one of INSEAD’s worldwide campuses in locations like China, Abu Dhabi, and the United States.

The school’s balance of history and innovation has helped to shape a curriculum devoted to big ideas about the interconnected nature of today’s business world.

The year-long MBA program begins with a three-week intensive “MBA Launch”, during which students learn about the Global Threats and Opportunties (GOTO) theme which will run throughout their time at the school.

The value Oxford Saïd places on integration and innovation can also be seen in the school’s three required integrative modules: Entrepreneurship, Global Rules of the Game, and Responsible Leadership.
